Jumlan Wooden Statues
Jumla region, Western Nepal, about 500 pieces
The wooden statues collected from the Jumla region of western Nepal are placed outdoors to protect the village from evil spirits. These statues depict ancestors and legendary heroes, characterized by their prayerful posture with hands clasped together. Over the years, exposure to the elements and insects has given them unique and intriguing shapes, with expressions often filled with humor. The Jumla region is home to people who are neither Hindus nor Buddhists, and they differ racially from the surrounding populations, often possessing Western features. Some theories suggest that they are descendants of Alexander the Great's eastern campaigns.
