Himalayan Masks

Collected in the Himalayan region, about 4,000 pieces in total

Himalayan masks were used in dances that performed rituals to pray to the gods for a safe year, as well as myths and ancestral stories. Captivated by their seemingly infinite variety of expressions, I have spent over 20 years traveling through the region to collect these masks. As a result, Konronsha's collection of Himalayan masks has grown to over 4,000 pieces, making it one of the largest, rarest, and most valuable collections in the world.

The diversity of their expressions stems from the harsh geographical conditions of the Himalayas, which prevented the easy influx of Indian and Tibetan cultures. People gradually adopted elements of different cultures, preserving their unique Himalayan traditions while creating their own stories. The motifs of the stories passed down in the villages are largely categorized by the village's religious beliefs (Hindu gods and Tantric Buddhist deities) and various spiritual beings closely related to daily life. These stories of supernatural beings and ancestors were performed in villages as essential rituals to ensure a peaceful year. The vibrant masks created by the people living in the isolated, island-like environment of the Himalayas. Here, we present a selection from the Konronsha Himalayan Mask Collection. The rich imagination of the people living in the Himalayas, connected to the earliest humans, will awaken from the depths of our consciousness.
